All Aflutter Afghan Square

Moogly 2017 CAL.pngThis square is from Oombawkadesigncrochet.com and is called All Aflutter.  You need to go check out this site.  She has everything – patterns, picture tutorials, video tutorials, giveaways, charities, and even parties.  I am not going to lie, I just spent over an hour looking at her site and I have things earmarked to go back and read again.

Honestly I have to say this is not my favorite square, I might end up frogging it and using a square from last years CAL to replace it.  It is great in multicolor, which is what it was designed for.  In a solid color i think it looks to messy in the middle, the motif gets lost.

The square itself is pretty easy to do.  What makes it even easier is there is a video tutorial right on the pattern page of how to do it – for both left and right hands.  Not enough time to watch the video?  No problem, there is a picture that shows what each round is supposed to look like after each rounds instructions!

These are my tips if you want to make the square in a solid color:

Rd 1:  Flip after round 1 to start 2 in the right spot.

Rd 3:  start where you are – ch1 and sc in back loop of starting spot, sc in back loop of next 3 sts, then pick up at the corner as written.

Rd 4:  To start in the middle – ch 1 and sc in starting spot, 3 sc in next st to corner, then pick up at corner as written.

Rd 5:  Sl st to corner then work as instructed.  Note the ch1 space they want you to work is where you skipped the sl st in the middle of the row.

Rd 6:  start where you are, ch 4 and 5 tr in same spot, then pick up at corner as written.

Rd 7:  start where you are, ch 2, 5 hdc across back loops, then pick up at corner as written.

Rd 8:  start where you are, ch 2, start at 4 hdc of side bar, and then pick up as written.

Rd 9:  start where you are, ch 2, 12 hdc in back loops to corner, then pick up as written.  (24 sts each side)

Rd 10: repeat Rd 9 (26 sts each side)

Rd 11:  repeat Rd 9 (28 sts each side)

Rd 12:  repeat Rd 9 (30 sts each side)

Rd 13:  repeat Rd 9 (32 sts each side)

**I repeated round 9 for 10 – 13 and ended up with a perfect 12 inches.  You could do Rds 12 – 15 in sc but since I am using one color I won’t see all the stripes from the sc rows changing colors.

    1. Thank you so much !!! Our dear friend had a 3lb 2oz baby girl 3 weeks ago. Weight fluctuating but now up to 3 lb 12 and doing well. Want to make one for her. And if it turns out will make some for the NICU unit at the hospital. I prefer knitting if you have any other patterns. Thanks. Kathy

      1. Oh poor sweetie! I know she will love it. I don’t have a knitting pattern but if you do a search on Facebook for “octopus for a preemie” Facebook group they might be able to give you one.
